Harry Potter and the Game of Thrones (because my brain has this terrible urge to make connections between everything I like, have the Harry Potter characters sorted into the houses of Westeros xD ~~I wanted to make this a gifset but have no idea how to make gifs, so have some doodles instead. yes I really have no life.~~)

♣ Harry Potter as House Stark | the boy who was promised, a thing for honour and “saving people”, and a house of orphans destined for great things.
♣ Hermione Granger as House Martell | headstrong, intelligent and outspoken - there’s a reason Hermione was sorted into Gryffindor.
♣ The Weasleys as House Tully | a loyal family of redheads, seemingly rustic but can surprise you with their badassery.
♣ Neville Longbottom as House Tyrell | because Tyrell’s words are appropriate! although not as political, he’s a power that grows throughout the story, and the sigil fits Neville’s love of herbology.
♣ Luna Lovegood as House Arryn | an association with air and high places that fits Ravenclaw Tower; seen as detached and a bit kooky by others.
♣ The Malfoys as House Lannister | arrogant blondes loaded with old money that they use for political power… they are a close-knit family, in their own way (and Narcissa’s actions at the end are very much “a Lannister always pays her debts”)
♣ Severus Snape as House Greyjoy | harsh and unforgiving; the house of Turncloaks and self-proclaimed Princes who make terrible life choices.
♣ Dolores Umbridge as House Bolton | creepy and manipulative; fond of pink and controlling their enemies by cutting them open.
♣ Fenrir Greyback as House Clegane | the Mad Dog, or the Mountain That Bites… employed as a vicious bruiser by the other Houses.
♣ Voldemort as House Targaryen | ’madness and greatness are two sides of the same coin’; ambitious, ruthless and scarily powerful.

In Music, Talent is Irrelevant

To say someone has a completely unique voice (or musical talent) in a population of 6+ billion people is pretty much a lie. You may be a superb singer, a damn fine drummer or a brilliant bassoonist, but chances are, there are probably 20 or 30 people who, given the right circumstances, can sing or play just as well as you (if not better).

I am not just talking about whether someone can sing the notes to the correct rhythm or whatever. I’m talking about the aspects that are harder to judge, the timbre, the vibrato, legato, bravado (no). I am saying that there will be 20 people out there who will sound the same. Probably not exactly the same. Maybe not as talented. But given 3 - 6 months. They would be able to mimic the voice convincingly.

Why is this important? Because it shows that any musical artist’s talent, at the end of the day, is irrelevant. Or rather, it’s more of a threshold to enter industry. It can be useful, but won’t make them successful.

Success comes from having the right talents at the right time and well with the right people. I can be an amazing harpist, but if everyone hates harps (or the harp market is supersaturated) then I’m fucked. On the other hand, harps could be the new black, there is no limit to just how much harp music people want. However, if you can’t find some kind of executive to promote your music, you won’t be successful. You may even find an executive who knows the right people to get you on Harp Magazine. But if you two don’t get along. If you’re personalities clash (whether through your own fault, or not) He won’t promote you and you won’t succeed. (Obviously, this is a simplification, a high enough demand can make anything possible)

Essentially what I’m trying to get at is that success does come about through individual talent. (It can help) Rather, having an objective, introspective understanding of your talent is more important. Where it will succeed, where it won’t. But at the end of the day, it all comes down to luck.

Think of any superfamous supersuccessful artists/ bands on the top 40 or 100 or whatever. (LMFAO, Pitbull, Katy Perry, Adele etc) Choose one and think long and hard about why they are successful. Let’s say Pitbull. He sells because: his name makes him sound like a dog (potentially appealing to women and men), he has a deep, cuban accented voice, he raps relatively well about things people want to hear. At the end of the day, if Pitbull didn’t exist you could probably pluck another latino rapper out of somewhere and put him in Pitbull’s place with similar results. He got where he is by having a level of talent and by being in the right place at the right time.

I’m not saying that this is a bad thing. It’s just a reality. I do think that it’s silly to judge “more talented” musicians as “better” than the “less talented” ones. Sure I may enjoy a singer that has an amazing range, but that is one of a multitude of factors that people use to subconsciously judge music.

Music is there to be enjoyed, whether the artists are talented or not.

At the end of the day, their talents didn’t get them where they were…

P.S. While you could say that YouTube is removing some of the barriers and letting the really talented musicians come out, it’s really not. The artists that have been discovered on YouTube have been discovered because their talent fit the demand at the time.
